The capital of Austria

Vienna, with its 1.8 million inhabitants, is located in the heart of Europe. With the Bureau of the United Nations based in Vienna, the city is one of the four official residences of the United Nations. With its historical and cultural highlights, paired with its famous Viennese hospitality, the city attracts millions of tourists every year.

A couple of centuries ago Vienna was the capital of the Habsburg dynasty. As a result, Vienna boasts a great diversity of magnificent historical buildings, churches and parks. Schönbrunn Palace, the summer residence of the former monarchs, is now one of Vienna’s most popular tourist attractions, with the beautiful palace set in magnificent gardens and wonderful surroundings. More than 5 million people visit Schönbrunn every year. In 1996, Schönbrunn Palace was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, recognised as one of Austria’s most important cultural monuments.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom in German) is the most famous gothic building in Austria and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna.

From the top of the Riesenrad – the Giant Ferris Wheel – in the Prater amusement park, and another of the city’s landmarks, you can enjoy an unparalleled view across the Prater and Vienna.

As the home of famous classical composers including Strauss, Mozart and Schubert, Vienna is also known as the capital city of music. The city also enjoys a very long cultural tradition of hosting the fine arts, theatres and the Vienna State Opera.

The Wiener Schnitzel and the Sachertorte are typical Viennese culinary specialities. Viennese coffeehouses and restaurants are famous for their welcoming atmosphere and excellent cuisine.

The Danube Island (Donauinsel) and the Alte Donau, a former branch of the Danube River, are the perfect location for long walks, bicycle tours and pleasant evenings spent in typical Viennese wine taverns.

Vienna is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Europe, and invites you to discover its history and culture.
